Do you think police were right to arrest illegals on grounds of giving false information to LEO-9-11 call ?

RALEIGH - A Mexican immigrant who was robbed in his Knightdale home last week called 911 for help, but now he faces a criminal charge of his own.

Self-employed mechanic Jose Luis Segura-Rios said he has lived illegally in the United States for at least 15 years. The turn of events that landed him in jail and his brother in the custody of federal immigration authorities for scheduled deportation has Segura-Rios and his attorney questioning the case's impact on the willingness of illegal immigrants to seek police help as crime victims.( So they believe illegals may lie and say whatever they want and that part is moral and o.k. ?)

Segura-Rios was charged with a forgery count of common-law uttering after investigators determined he had provided them false identification and misrepresented who he was after the Sept. 16 robbery, according to the Wake County Sheriff's Office.

Search warrants indicate that at least one of the suspects who broke into the Terry Lane house Segura-Rios shared with his brother and two other men was asked whether the motive for the robbery was to recover more than $200,000 from a cocaine deal. The warrant does not say why the investigators think the robbery was drug-related.

According to the search warrants, no drugs, drug paraphernalia or money related to the alleged transaction were recovered from the home, however, and Segura-Rios denied knowledge of any drug dealing in a Tuesday interview from the Wake County jail. Also, Segura-Rios said that as the robbers fled his home, a Wake County sheriff's deputy struck him in the leg with a baton as he tried to explain the robbers were getting away.

Asked whether he regretted calling 911 for help, Segura-Rios said Tuesday, ';I'd have to think hard about it, because look what happens when you call 911. You end up losing, because you have no one protecting you.';

Wake Sheriff Donnie Harrison said his department had little choice but to contact U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for assistance after they determined Segura-Rios and two other men misrepresented their identities in follow-up interviews after the robbery.

Absolutely on two accounts. If the guy told the truth to the officer nothing would have happened as police officers are not allowed to uphold immigration laws, per 9th Circuit appellate court. North Carolina is out of their jurisdiction but currently only one place in the U.S. has even tried to have their officers enforce immigration and it was shot down.

They were wrong in that they .....

1-Provided false identification to a peace officer

2- Filed a false statement

This has nothing to do with being here illegally. They could have been safer telling who they really were. The officers would have never known as they can only ask for ID and not perform immigration checks.Do you think police were right to arrest illegals on grounds of giving false information to LEO-9-11 call ?
Yes. The victims of the burglary were also criminals. Being a victim does not shield a person from criminal prosecution.
Yes! He wouldnt have anything to worry about if he had just obeyed the law and become a legal citizen like the rest of us. Thats his own fault.
They are illegals, what do you think.
They broke the law the minute the came here illegally. So Yes the cops did the right thing. It's about time.
Yes they were. Anyone breaking any of our laws is eligible for arrest.
I feel sorry for him but he was breaking the law by being here illegally. I wish it was easier for people to come to the US but until it becomes easier we have to enforce the laws on the books.
So you're not even sure if giving false information is wrong? WOW!

Good thing you brought this question up, because there's a case in Philadelphia were this guy (non illegal immigrant) gave FALSE INFORMATION to the cop, ran off, Shot him with a gun ';executing him';, stole a bike from a passer by, threw that bike at another cop, ran off again, to only shot another officer and killing him!

I hope you get answers to your question, because this story fits right in with yours, but it's a US Citizen and it may be a little worst because this guy had a rap sheet as long at Texas.
